Fort Ontario History and Archaeology Conference April 23, 2017 Field Trip Itinerary

April 23, 2017

1) 8:30 AM Board bus – Best Western Hotel & Conference Center: Overlooks a gravelly point and inlet featured on early maps and illustrations of Oswego Harbor.
2) Site of Montcalm’s 1756 and de la Corne’s 1759 landing places and Montcalm’s artillery park and battery.
3) Site of Montcalm’s infantry entrenchments and Descombles’ road to Fort Ontario.
4) Fort Ontario: Site of Devillier’s May 1756 attack, Montcalm’s 1756 attack, Bradstreet’s 1758 base for the Frontenac campaign, site of de la Corne’s 1759 attack on Fort Ontario, Amherst’ 1760 base for the Montreal campaign, and more.
5) Montcalm Park: Site of Fort George or “Fort Rascal” captured by Montcalm in 1756, Site of redoubts, 1759 – 1814.
6) Site of Fort Oswego, 1727 – 1756: Site of redoubts and batteries from 1759 through the War of 1812.
7) Battle Island: Site of De Villier’s attack on Bradstreet’s Bateaux column in July 1756.
Lunch at Battle Island Club House.
8) Oswego Falls: Site of a set of falls, fortifications, corduroy road, and a portage on the Mohawk-Oneida-Oswego water route to Oswego.
9) Ox Creek: Juncture of Ox Creek and the Oswego River. Site of a 1756 Fortification.

10) Walter’s Island: Site of Bateaux Camps.
11) Three Rivers: An important depot and camp on the Mohawk-Oneida-Oswego route to Oswego through the War of 1812.
12) Fort Brewerton: Built by the British in 1759 and destroyed in 1767.
